First Sale – First Flip

The rarest Origin Moon in #Gazers1000 is 'First Sale – First Flip,' only 4 in existence, commemorating the minting of my genesis token on @SuperRare 3 years ago in 2019. Another Origin Moon story time… 🧵 pic.twitter.com/eWJvkRirC0

The story in short was published as part of the @NYTmag story, "The Untold Story of the NFT Boom" by @pomeranian99 one year ago this week. pic.twitter.com/KdB54Tnp5A

May 6, 2019 – it felt like an important moment, minting and selling my first NFT, so I documented it with screenshots and terrible cellphone photos of my computer screen. @SuperRare was cool enough to tweet about my first bid and include me in their weekly newsletter. 🙏 pic.twitter.com/3KWqQnv9A7

I researched who the bidder was. They were a co-host of a podcast called Digitally RARE. I very excitedly accepted their bid the next day, thinking this would be a great collector to help promote my entrance to #cryptoart. As I'm known to do, I'd gotten ahead of myself.😂 My bad. pic.twitter.com/dIrOFzjuDm

Of course a week later, I got this email congratulating me on their flipping my work for a 0.05 ETH profit ~$60. I had mixed feelings. Mostly, I was thrilled to have my first experience with the concept of royalties, which was so important in my decision in where I minted my art. pic.twitter.com/FlCn9ylBGm

On the other hand, the artwork was psychically charged for me; a visual manifestation of the grief that led me to dedicate myself so completely to digital art 5 years earlier in 2014. Read more about the M87 Blackhole Deconstruction series here: https://t.co/to4e01dibg pic.twitter.com/1pLaS8zOQK

Taking a $60 profit on an artwork which I took risk to to express so much of my inner self with – it didn't sit well with me. I'd had my experience soured similarly, selling my work in a gallery, 14 years earlier. But with a thicker skin, I decided to bide my time in this market. pic.twitter.com/tgKC4pfloj

The market SO undervalued our work in 2019. The 0.05 ETH royalty was enough to allow me to collect work of fellow artist, @BardIonson. "There Is Nothing Wrong," an early GAN work is layered in historic significance, conglomerating images of 2019's political obsession. Priceless. pic.twitter.com/HFZahfyB8o

Having my first NFT minted, sold, flipped, and put toward collecting other artists within one single lunar month became important lessons guiding my own collecting, expectations, the art I've put before this market, and the sensitivity I've strived to show toward other artists.🙏 pic.twitter.com/yQQkl2j80U

A little over a year after the "First Sale – First Flip," I'd buy my genesis NFT back for 20 ETH. A $60 Flip became a $6,000 Flip. For those of us who understand where value is truly derived, we write our stories to the blockchain, revealing our truth. 🪡 pic.twitter.com/dZJsK7gmQ5
